Is this Shopify's official MCP server?

No. Shopify offers its own MCP servers, including the Shopify connector for Claude, the Dev MCP server for developers and Storefront MCP servers for shopping experiences. InsightfulPipe is an independent, hosted MCP server that connects to your store through the Shopify Admin API, and is not affiliated with Shopify.

Which AI assistants does it work with?

Any AI client that supports remote MCP servers. The setup guide on this page covers Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI and Codex. You can also work with the same connected stores from the terminal with the InsightfulPipe CLI.

Is there a Claude connector for Shopify?

Yes. In Claude, add https://shopify.insightfulmcp.com/ as a custom connector and authorize your InsightfulPipe account. You can also add InsightfulPipe from the Claude Directory, which connects all of your linked accounts at once.

Can I use the Shopify MCP server with ChatGPT?

Yes. Add the server URL as a custom connector in ChatGPT Developer mode, or add InsightfulPipe from the ChatGPT app directory to connect all of your linked accounts. Developer mode availability depends on your ChatGPT plan.

What Shopify data can my AI access?

Orders, transactions, refunds, fulfillments, fraud risk, abandoned checkouts, draft orders, products, variants, collections, inventory and locations, customers, price rules and discount codes, gift cards (Shopify Plus), Shopify Payments balance, payouts and disputes, marketing events, metafields, pages, blogs and articles, redirects, themes, shipping zones, policies and webhooks.

Can it make changes to my store?

Yes, if the custom app you connect has write scopes. It can create and update products, variants, images and collections, set and adjust inventory, manage customers and draft orders, create fulfillments and update tracking, create refunds, close, reopen and cancel orders, and manage pages, metafields, webhooks and theme files.

Can it email my customers?

Only when an action asks Shopify to. Sending an account invite or a draft order invoice emails the customer, and refunds, cancellations and fulfillments can notify the customer when that option is set. Turn those actions off for any store where agents should not contact customers.

Can I connect multiple Shopify stores?

Yes. Connect each store with its own custom app, then tell your assistant which store to use. Each store counts as one connection on your plan.

What are the limitations?

The server works through the Shopify Admin REST API. There are no product or customer deletes, and blog articles, discounts and redirects are read-only. Gift card data needs Shopify Plus, and payouts and disputes need Shopify Payments. Lists return up to 250 records per page, and your assistant pages through larger results.

A Shopify MCP server connects a Shopify store to AI assistants through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for giving AI tools access to data and actions. Once connected, you can ask Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor about orders, products and customers, or ask it to update your store, instead of working through the Shopify admin.

Shopify's connector, installed from Claude, works with products, collections, inventory, discounts, pages and menus, reads orders and customers, and runs analytics queries. Shopify says it cannot refund, cancel or capture orders or edit your live theme. InsightfulPipe adds order operations such as fulfillments, refunds and draft orders, works in other MCP clients such as ChatGPT and Cursor, connects your other marketing platforms and adds per-store action controls.

You control the risk. A store whose app only has read scopes connects as Read-only, and on Read & Write stores you choose exactly which actions your AI can use. Cancelling orders, deleting pages and deleting theme files stay off until an owner, admin or operator enables them. Refunds, invoices and theme edits are regular write actions and take effect immediately, and edits to your published theme show on the storefront right away. Restricted members only get read actions on the stores they are granted.

Create a custom app for your store in Shopify, grant it the scopes you want, and paste the store name, client ID and client secret into InsightfulPipe. The scopes you grant decide whether the store connects as Read-only or Read & Write. InsightfulPipe stores the secret encrypted and uses it to refresh short-lived store tokens. Your AI client signs in to the MCP server with your InsightfulPipe account, not your Shopify login.
